2. Dr. K S Iyer
Dr. K S Iyer is India’s front ranking pediatric cardiac surgeon. Renowned for his clinical expertise and wide ranging involvement with cardiac care for children in India and developing nations, Dr. Iyer initiated the dedicated pediatric cardiac care programme, a pioneering initiative, at Escorts Heart Institute in 1995. Under his guidance, the pediatric cardiac programme at Escorts Heart Institute has become the benchmark for cardiac care for children for India and its south East Asian neighbours. The pediatric cardiac care facility has a 10 bed ICU, 36 bed pediatric unit and
does 600 cases a year. Dr. Iyer has operated on more than 7000 children and adult with congenital heart diseases
spanning arterial switch operations, Fontan and Fontan type procedures, corrections for tetralogy of fallot, senning operations and wide range of one stage and multi-stage corrections for complex congenital heart diseases. He has done original work on rapid two-stage arterial switch. His current interests are cardiac surgery in malnourished infants and children and salvaging late presenters of chronic heart diseases. Dr. Iyer completed his M.B.B.S, M.S. and M.Ch. (Postgraduate examination in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery) from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Post his education, he joined the cardiology department of AIIMS and was Additional Professor at AIIMS before moving to Escorts Heart Institute to set up its pediatric cardiac care division. He trained in pediatric and infant cardiac surgery under the guidance of the renowned pediatric cardiac surgeon – Dr. R.B.B.Mee – as Senior Fellow at the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne in Australia. Since his return he has endeavored to popularize the specialty of pediatric and congenital heart surgery in India. He has contributed prolifically to furthering the cause of pediatric cardiac care through a large

Dr. Bhan is an outstanding cardiovascular surgeon and a graduate from Medical College Srinagar (Best outgoing graduate-Gold Medalist). He possesses largest experience in Aortic surgery in India. He has designed and developed more than 50 surgical instruments in the field of cardiac surgery. Dr. Bhan was one of the team members that performed the first successful Heart Transplantation in India (1994). - Has the distinction of performing India’s 1st heart-kidneycombined transplant and performing heart transplant for a 69 year old person (oldest man to undergo heart transplant in India).
- He is the 1st heart surgeon in India who did heart and lung transplantations successfully. Dr.Gokhale did the 1st successful heart transplant, 1st successful lung transplant and 1st successful implantation of ventricular assist device as bridge to recovery of heart in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
- Dr.Gokhale did 29 heart transplants and 3 lung transplants and more than 15,000 open heart surgeries – adult as well as pediatric with a success rate of 98.4%.
