Dr Sandeep Vaishya, Executive Director, Neurosurgery, recently operated on the largest recorded Meningomyelocele. It is a condition in which the spinal canal and the back bone don’t close before the baby is born. It is suspected that lack of folic acid at the time of pregnancy can cater to its development. A congenital defect of the spinal cord had caused a massive swelling on the spine, which had led to the accumulation of an abnormal amount of cerebro – spinal fluid. As a result of this abnormality, the patient had been paraplegic waist down, with no control over his bowel and bladder since childhood. The surgery was completed successfully and the patient’s recovery has been smooth and uneventful. It was a miracle surgery performed on a 43 year old male patient which earned Dr Sandeep Vaishya, special recognition in the LIMCA book of records.
