Exelsius GPS Spine Surgery Robot-Advancement of Medical Technology in India
The Exelsius GPS Spine Surgery Robot, the most advanced 3rd generation spine robot, launched in Chennai at the Apollo Institute of Spine surgery. The institute was launched by Honorable Health Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr. C. Vijayabaskar in the presence of Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Founder and Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group and Dr. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson of Apollo Hospitals Group.
The Apollo Institute of Spine Surgery offers specialized spine services and 360-degree care from the most advanced robotic system called the “Exelsius GPS Spine Surgery Robot” for complex spine surgeries. This advanced treatment reduces instances of infections, implant inaccuracies, revision surgeries, radiation exposures, and patient’s length of stay at the facility.
Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Founder and Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group, said, “Apollo Hospitals Group has a unique track record of pioneering complex spine surgery procedures in South Asia. The first artificial lumbar disc replacement, the first use of shape memory alloy, the first Robotic Assisted Spine Surgery using Mazor robotics about 6 years back, the robotic rehab with Hocoma units and now the most advanced 3rd Generation Spine Robot to perform extremely complex and challenging spine surgeries with extreme safety and precision.”
He also added, “The clinical team is well supported by Neuro physicians, Rheumatologists, Neurosurgeons and specialized Physiotherapy and Rehab teams and will have unmatched clinical bandwidth not only in the Afro-Asian region but will match the outcomes of the best centres in the western world.”
3 patients with complex spine issues were also underwent robotic procedures at Apollo Hospitals using the newly introduced “Exelsius GPS Spine Surgery Robot”, which included a 31-year-old man suffering from complex cervical deformity who underwent robotic cervical instrumentation with deformity correction. A 75-year-old woman with degenerative lumbar canal stenosis was operated with single position lateral with decompression and robotic stabilization was also done for the first time in India. Also, a 16-year-old girl with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis was operated with novel motion preservation, non-fusion anterior scoliosis correction.
Speaking at the event Dr. Sajan Hegde, Chief Spine Surgeon, Apollo Institute of Spine Surgery (Centre for Robotic & Complex Spine Surgery), said “Patients who have been affected with neck or spine conditions will immensely benefit from this advanced technology. This will allow the surgeon to perform less invasive surgical procedures with smaller incisions and less operative bleeding, helping in fast patient recovery.”
The surgical demonstration also included the treatment of spinal deformity using fusion less scoliosis correction. This concept of treating spinal deformity will be a game changer in the future. Three renowned spine surgeons Dr. Per Trobisch (Germany), Dr. Peter Douglas Klassen (Germany), Dr. John Choi (Australia) also participated in the program. All these surgeries were performed for the first time in India. The event also saw participation of over forty spine surgeons from across the world.
