Dr Harsh Rastogi, Neuro Intervention Radiologist at Apollo hospital, decided on the carotid artery stenting to save Pushpa Devi (99), who had 99 per cent blockages in her brain.
City doctors have given a new lease of life to a 65-year-old woman, who had 99 per cent blockages in her brain, without an invasive operation.
“Pushpa Devi was examined and it was confirmed that she was suffering from carotid artery disease. It is a condition in which the carotid arteries become narrowed or blocked. She had also lost her ability to speak,” Dr Harsh Rastogi, Neuro Intervention Radiologist at Apollo hospital, said.
“The recommended path was to put Devi on medications since surgery was not an option,” he added.
The alternative was the endovascular angioplasty and stenting procedure.
Dr Rastogi decided on the carotid artery stenting – a minimally invasive procedure carried out under local anaesthesia.
“Devi was able to speak again. Her chances of a stroke also got reduced by this procedure,” Dr Rastogi said.
