A team of doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital performed a unique Endoscopic Stapling Technique to treat an 75 years old patient suffering from Zenker’s Diverticulum, a rare throat disorder, here recently. It is a condition in which there is ‘out pouching’ in the throat, since the food goes into the instead of food pipe. The team was led by Dr Amit Miglani, Senior Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad.
Mr Surinder from Faridabad was facing difficulties in swallowing, high fever & breathlessness. His condition deteriorated causing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia and high-grade fever. He was extremely weak when he finally sought treatment at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad.
After required clinical examination, Dr Amit Miglani diagnosed that he was suffering from Zenker Diverticulum . Given his age and other critical health conditions, a careful plan was drawn up and this unique Endoscopic Stapling Technique was finalized for treating it. It is a minimally invasive treatment option that eliminated the risks posed by a complicated surgery. It caused the septum diverticulum to break and Mr. Surinder’s symptoms improved dramatically. Within a day of the endoscopy, he was feeling better and was being able to be taken in food orally. Additionally, his lung infection and breathlessness had considerably reduced. After a successful procedure, the patient was discharged within two days.
Zenker’s Diverticulum. In most of these cases, complex surgeries are usually prescribed for treatment. The unique procedure was selected to mitigate any risk that was associated with advanced age of the patient as well as his overall health conditions.
Dr. Amit Miglani, Senior Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “We needed to ensure that the discomfort of the patient is relieved, and the treatment option was minimally invasive with negligible risk factors. If we had opted for surgical intervention, the patients’ condition could have worsened and then the process of recovery would have been painful and time consuming. Also, the patient’s vital signs were not good, therefore performing surgery was extremely risky. What makes this case different is that we opted for an unconventional treatment line – in a case like this, endoscopies are not usually performed. I am glad to state that Mr. Surinder is free of symptoms and doing better.”
Mr. Mohit Singh, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “Such cases are a testament to our ability to innovate and make our approach patient centric. Our clinical expertise and skills sets allow us to think of new treatment options and solutions. We always try to see the best possible treatment which has minimum risk and maximum outcome.”
