NEW DELHI: Dr. Sonal Gupta, Director, Neurosurgery, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, recently operated upon a 90-year-old patient having a brain tumour. The tumour was pressing the part of the brain controlling the right side of the body and also pressing the speech center in the brain.

The challenge was to operate upon the man who had various associated problems, as he earlier had a paralytic attack which resulted in slurred speech.

Patient Narendra Kumar Kundu’s family met the doctor and was uncertain if due to his age, the case could be taken up for surgery.

In view of the brain being pressed by the tumor, the patient was given steroids and medications to suppress the swelling and to prevent fits.

“In the three hours surgery, the tumor was removed completely without damaging the inner membrane of the brain. The skull was reconstructed by putting back the bone flap and fixing it back with clamps,” said Dr Gupta.

“The patient has now fully recovered, with his speech back to normal and is no more in a paralyzed state,” she added.
