She was recommended to undergo chemotherapy for six months followed by one-and-a-half month of radiotherapy. The patient is now disease-free, but her health is being monitored.

International Tumour Board of American Oncology Institute (AOI) at NRI Hospitals Mangalagiri successfully treated a 30-year-old-breast cancer patient from Kakinada, said AOI Radiation Oncologist Dr Prashant Yarlagadda.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Prashant said that a few months ago, the patient, Radha (name changed), had noticed a small lump (with a radius of 2 cm) in the lower portion of her right breast. She underwent a surgery to remove the tumour while preserving the breast tissue.

After the surgery, the patient came for consultation and was diagnosed with a stage-I cancer. Her case was discussed in the weekly International Tumour Board meeting, where doctors from AOIs across India come and take part along with a team of international cancer experts from University of Pittsburgh Medical College (UPMC), Prashant said.

After examining the patient’s condition, the board advised her to undergo Oncotype Dx or MammaPrint, a special test that was developed in the United States specifically for breast cancer, and helps identify the chances of its recurrence. She was recommended to undergo chemotherapy for six months followed by one-and-a-half month of radiotherapy. The patient is now disease-free, but her health is being monitored.
